Do you ever wake up one day and wonder how lucky you are?

That so many things are going right. That you are way better off than 99% of the rest of the world, given that you’re able to read this. And yet the only reason you’re lucky enough to have all of this is cause you were born where and to whom you were born. Isn’t it unfair?

And then you start to wonder whether it’s all a dream. That you could wake up and everything would be gone. That fear where you’re stuck with memories of what could have been and habits developed from a privileged lifestyle, but you’re trapped in a reality that renders both useless. So you start to appreciate everything more.

The opportunities to meet the people you’ve met; the opportunities to befriend the friends you’ve made; the opportunities to fall for the people you’ve dated. The opportunities to interact with the brightest minds of your generation; the opportunities to learn from the best professors in the world, the opportunities to work at the best companies in every industry within a BART ride.

Because everything could have been way worse, right? You could be living a life where your constant fears are getting enough food to eat or not dying the next day instead of your grades or whether you should buy that pair of jeans. That’s what you’re supposed to think, right?

And yet it’s impossible for me to relate. How can you relate to a lifestyle where hunger is life-threatening? Where you go to sleep wondering whether you’ll wake up the next day? All I can do is imagine what it would be like, and those imaginations are as real and powerful as my belief in unicorns and dragons.

But I don’t even want those imaginations to be realized. I don’t want to be happy with my life by comparing it to others’. It seems contradictory and manipulative to look at others in what I would call misery in order to boost my morale.

So how do I justify these opportunities that life/destiny have unfairly bestowed upon me? I don’t. I can’t. All I can say is that I have been given a multitude of opportunities, but it all is for naught unless I seize those opportunities. And seize I have. My life is where it is now because I seized some opportunities, and I have primarily worked to get to where I am today.

It’s unfair that life bestows opportunities that i crave upon others instead of me, but it’s equally unfair that I’ve had opportunities that others crave upon myself. All I can do is accept it and make the most of what I’ve given.

Because often I crave a result—not the opportunity. And the result doesn’t magically appear there; someone seized an opportunity and transformed it into that success.
